En mi opinión, al contrario, el discurso no fue digno de un presidente de gobierno o un jefe de Estado con alguna proyección en el concierto mundial. A partir de este juicio, la única forma que encuentro de mostrar respeto a su investidura y reconocimiento a su inteligencia y a su capacidad personal es plantear sin rodeos que lo puede hacer mucho mejor, por el buen nombre de nuestro país y por su propio prestigio internacional.

Realmente es difícil entender a quién quería impresionar nuestro presidente explicando en el máximo foro de las naciones del mundo, como quien ha descubierto algo hasta ahora desconocido, que las redes sociales han cambiado las comunicaciones y la forma de hacer política y que son ahora muy importantes para ganar elecciones, como quedó demostrado por la forma en que él derrotó en El Salvador a los partidos tradicionales. ¿En serio cree que esa fue una hazaña digna de mención en un foro internacional como el de Naciones Unidas?

¿Qué pueden haber pensado los “americanos”, que sí rompieron el molde de las campañas electorales hace once años en la primera victoria de Obama y más recientemente en la de su amigo Donald Trump? Qué pueden haber pensado los brasileños o los mexicanos, que vivieron antes que El Salvador el uso brutal de las redes sociales en las victorias de Bolsonaro y de López Obrador?

¿Qué puede haber pensado la delegación de Túnez, país en el que una gran convocatoria de redes sociales abrió las jornadas insurreccionales que derrocaron a Ben Alí y detonaron la explosión de la “Primavera Árabe” en enero de 2010?

¿Que habrá pensado la delegación de Egipto, país en el que los estudiantes y sus redes sociales fueron decisivos para el derrocamiento de Hosni Mubarak, que llevaba 30 años en el poder? ¿O la delegación de Libia, o la de Siria o la de Yemen que también derrocaron a sus dictadores en África y en Asia, o la de cualquier país de Europa Occidental? ¿Por qué nos estará explicando este señor que las redes sociales han cambiado la forma de hacer política, si es algo que ya hemos experimentado hasta la saciedad? ¿Por qué pensará el presidente de El Salvador que hablar de “Facebook” y “Twitter” es novedoso y “disruptivo”? ¿Qué clase de provincianismo es ese, carente por completo de sensibilidad y de roce internacional?

La segunda “idea”, de un discurso que solo tuvo dos, fue el señalamiento a la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas por tener, a juicio de nuestro presidente, un formato obsoleto. En este orden llegó a decir, palabras de más o de menos, que los discursos no los escucha nadie, que su “selfie” tendría muchas más vistas que oyentes su discurso (en eso acertó, porque muy poca gente lo escuchó) y que no debiera hacer falta viajar y gastar tanto dinero para ir a Nueva York.

Aparte de la flagrante incoherencia, porque si eso piensa no debió ir y no debió gastar tanto dinero en viajar, lo cierto es que esas afirmaciones proyectaron una imagen —tal vez injusta, pero merecida— del presidente de El Salvador como alguien que cree que la Asamblea General no es más que una jornada de discursos pronunciados en un gran salón.

La realidad, sin embargo, es que los discursos definidos como “debate general” constituyen una sola actividad, la que da inicio cada año a un nuevo período de sesiones de la Asamblea General.

La Asamblea General incluye este año una cumbre sobre la acción climática, una reunión de alto nivel sobre la cobertura sanitaria universal, un diálogo de alto nivel sobre la financiación para el desarrollo y una reunión para promover la eliminación total de las armas nucleares, para solo citar algunas de las actividades que obviamente no podrían realizarse comunicándose por Twitter, por Facebook, por Skype o por FaceTtime.
